Short answer: absolutely.
Long answer: not only can you book a boudoir session for yourself, but a large percentage of my clients do.
One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is that it has to be for someone else. Somewhere along the way, boudoir became heavily associated with wedding gifts, anniversary presents, Valentine’s Day surprises, and significant others.
And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with booking a boudoir session as a gift, that’s only one small piece of the story.
As a Michigan boudoir photographer, I’ve photographed brides creating wedding gifts, wives celebrating anniversaries, and partners planning surprises. I’ve also photographed many more women who were single, divorced, recently engaged, newly sober, celebrating birthdays, surviving difficult chapters, reaching fitness goals, recovering from heartbreak, entering new seasons of life, or simply checking something off their bucket list.
The truth is that boudoir is often far more personal than people realize.
If I asked the internet why people book boudoir sessions, I’d probably get a lot of answers about confidence, feeling sexy, or creating a gift for a partner.
Those things certainly happen.
But when I sit down and talk with actual clients, the reasons are often much deeper and much more personal.
Sometimes a client has spent years putting everyone else first and wants to do something that belongs entirely to her.
Sometimes she’s celebrating a milestone birthday.
Sometimes she’s leaving a marriage and trying to reconnect with herself outside of a relationship.
Sometimes she’s accomplished something she never thought she’d accomplish and wants to document this chapter of her life before it changes again.
And sometimes there isn’t a dramatic reason at all, she just simply wants to. And I think that’s reason enough.
This is another myth I see all the time, feeling like there needs to be a reason to justify booking a boudoir session.
They need a wedding.
An anniversary.
A birthday.
A milestone.
A major life event.
Something that makes the experience feel earned.
But I’ve never believed that you have to earn the right to exist in photos or to celebrate yourself.
You don’t need a special occasion to document who you are right now because life itself is literally happening right now.
This version of you is worth remembering too.
One of the things I love most about boudoir photography is that every session tells a different story.
I’ve photographed women who walked into the studio fresh out of a divorce and determined to rediscover who they were. I’ve photographed women celebrating years of sobriety. I’ve photographed women marking major career achievements, weight loss journeys, and personal victories that nobody else even knew about. I’ve photographed a trans woman who wasn’t yet comfortable fully transitioning but wanted to see herself.
I’ve photographed women who booked because they were turning 40, 50, and 60.
I’ve photographed women who booked because they spent years saying, “Maybe someday.”
Then they finally got tired of waiting.
None of those sessions were about somebody else, they were about themselves.
Even when a client plans to share images with a partner, I still believe the photos should be for her first.
That’s because the experience belongs to her.
The laughter belongs to her.
The nerves belong to her.
The courage it took to show up belongs to her.
The photos become artwork that reflects a moment in her life, and that moment has value whether anyone else ever sees the images or not.
In fact, many of my clients choose to keep their images completely private.
It’s about creating something meaningful for yourself, not for anyone else.
After years of photographing boudoir in Bay City, Michigan, I’ve come to a pretty simple conclusion. The best reason to book a boudoir session is the reason that feels important to you.
And that’s it, you don’t need to justify it.
Can you book a boudoir session just for yourself? Absolutely.
You don’t need a wedding, an anniversary, a partner, or a special occasion. There doesn’t need a reason that sounds impressive to other people.
You just need a willingness to show up and have the experience.
As a Bay City boudoir photographer, I’ve learned that the clients who book for themselves often walk away with something much bigger than beautiful photos. They walk away with proof that they were willing to choose themselves for a change. Which is a pretty good reason to book a session.
Boudoir isn’t about showing up already confident, perfectly posed, or magically comfortable in front of a camera.
Most clients walk into their session nervous, that’s completely normal. My job is to help you settle in, guide you through every pose, and create images that feel like you, not some overly edited version of you that looks like she has never had a pore, stretch mark, or life experience.
I photograph real bodies with intention, care, and a whole lot of direction. Every image is hand-edited individually with the goal of enhancing the photo, not changing you into a different person.
Wherever you are coming from, your session is designed to feel comfortable, personal, and actually doable.

I’ll go first, having my nails and lashes done. I instantly feel more put together even if I haven’t done anything else with myself that day.

"From the moment I walked in, I felt so comfortable, confident, and completely at ease. Arielle created such a welcoming and empowering environment that made the entire shoot feel natural and fun. I was honestly nervous beforehand, but she hyped me up the whole time and made me feel beautiful in every pose.
The photos turned out absolutely incredible and exceeded all my expectations. If you’re thinking about booking a boudoir session, do it. You will leave feeling so confident and empowered. Highly recommend!"

Session prep tip:
Drink some water in the days leading up to your session.
Not because I`m about to give you some weird wellness lecture.
Because you`re going to bending like a pretzel.
You`ll feel better the next day after if you`re hydrated.

Something I`ve heard from a few people lately:
"I`m interested, but I`m really nervous."
And listen, I`d be more surprised if you weren`t.
Most clients walk through the studio door nervous.
That`s completely normal.

It`s been one whole year since coming to the new studio (peep the selfie from my first session here), and it still feels a bit like a pinch me moment when I come in. Sometimes it`s crazy to reflect on a years growth because it`s a lot of time while simultaneously being no time at all.
I generally am someone who will do things on a whim with the belief it`ll work out, and deciding to take a chance by saying yes has continued to still be a pretty rad decision.
Thanks for being here. 💕
