Behind the Lens: A Day in the Life of a Boudoir Photographer

Ever wonder what it’s really like behind the scenes of a boudoir photography studio? From pre-shoot prep to post-session edits, it’s a whirlwind of emotion, connection, empowerment – and yes, a lot of coffee. This is more than just taking sexy photos. It’s storytelling, healing, and helping women fall in love with themselves again. Come behind the lens with me and experience the magic of a day in the life of a boudoir photographer at Arielle Roth Boudoir.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be on the other side of the camera in a boudoir studio – not as a client, but as the woman behind the lens? Let me take you inside my world. At Arielle Roth Boudoir, being a boudoir photographer in Bay City, Michigan is about so much more than pressing a shutter. It’s storytelling. It’s transformation. It’s real, raw, and powerful as hell.

I wear many hats – photographer, stylist, therapist (unlicensed, but emotionally equipped), editor, studio designer, hype woman, and business owner. Each day is infused with emotion, art, and a healthy dose of decaf (because, Adderall) and caffeinated coffee. Here’s a peek at what a day in my life actually looks like.

Mornings: Intention, Cats, and Calendars

Mornings start slow and sacred in my world. My intention-setting ritual grounds me in the energy I want to hold for my clients – confidence, softness, safety, and strength.

While sipping coffee and snuggling Weasley and Bass (my two chaos gremlins in feline form), I scroll through emails, DMs, and new inquiries. My studio is by-appointment-only, so every boudoir session is intentionally planned with you in mind.

Today’s schedule? A glowing maternity boudoir session at 10 AM.

Pre-Shoot Prep: Setting the Scene for Self-Love

Prepping the studio is a sacred ritual. I’ve curated a private boudoir studio in Bay City that balances cozy, creative, and elevated. Think velvet chairs, gold mirrors, candles, and textures that just feel good.

With over 350 pieces in my client closet, I pull lingerie in your size, preferred colors, and vibe – lace for softness, leather for edge, mesh for a little tease. You can try them on before your session, and yes, I’m absolutely your stylist / hype woman during this time. We’ll pick pieces that light you up.

Got a session add-on? I prep those too:

  • Angel wings for a divine vibe

  • Wet skin shower setup for sultry drama

  • Kink-friendly setups for the bold babes

  • Romantic swings and couple’s props for intimate storytelling

I dim the lights, start the playlist, and spray a signature scent in the room to ground the energy. This isn’t just a photoshoot. It’s an experience. A transformation.

During the Shoot: Capturing Confidence, Frame by Frame

The first 15 minutes? Nerves are so normal. That’s why I ease us in with conversation, laughter, and simple poses. I’ll walk you through every movement – no modeling experience required. I even shoot in my bra and underwear during sessions to normalize the experience and remind you: you’re safe here.

As we move through the shoot, there’s always a moment when something shifts. A client’s posture changes. Their smile becomes softer. Their energy drops from performative to present. And that’s when the real magic begins.

Each session is tailored to your energy and goals:

  • Maternity sessions highlight strength and softness

  • Couples boudoir captures trust, chemistry, and playfulness

  • Solo sessions reclaim autonomy and sensuality

No two shoots are the same, and that’s the beauty of it. As an inclusive boudoir photographer in Michigan, I welcome all bodies, identities, and love stories.

After the Shoot: Happy Tears & Sneak Peeks

Once we wrap, I show a few unedited previews. That moment when someone says, “Wait…that’s ME?!” – instant dopamine.

There’s usually laughter, sometimes tears, and always a hug. Seeing yourself through someone else’s lens of love and artistry? It’s emotional.

After you leave, I:

  • Start breaking down props (unless ADHD wins and I procrastinate)

  • Tidy the lingerie from our try-on spree

  • Journal a few notes about the day’s energy

  • Take a moment to thank the space and reset

Then it’s time for a quick walk, cat cuddles, or honestly? A scroll through TikTok while I eat something high-protein in a grazing bowl.

Evening Vibes: Editing, Emails & Endless Creativity

Evenings are for edits and ideation. Post-production is where the art gets polished. I don’t edit to change you – I edit to honor your essence and enhance your features. It’s less about Photoshop and more about showcasing light, texture, and mood.

The editing process includes:

  • Reviewing 200 – 500+ images per session

  • Culling with care (every photo gets looked at!)

  • Editing for skin tone, softness, contrast, and that signature glow

  • Creating a final gallery that tells your unique story

While images export, I answer emails, prep future sessions, and schedule posts for my VIP Facebook Group and Instagram. I might brainstorm a new blog post or fresh content for my bachelorette boudoir party packages (those are a whole vibe – Airbnb, wine, group glam, and boudoir magic!).

Did you know I also offer makeup artistry in Michigan? Yup, I’m your all-in-one glam squad.

What Being a Boudoir Photographer Has Taught Me

This job is a mirror. Every day, I’m reminded of how much courage, beauty, and depth we hold as women – often without even realizing it.

I’ve watched:

  • Survivors reclaim their stories

  • Moms rediscover their bodies

  • Brides step into their sensuality

  • Women cry tears of pride instead of shame

And I’ve grown with them. Boudoir taught me to embrace my own stretch marks, soft belly, sharp mind, and tender heart. It showed me that empowerment isn’t just a buzzword – it’s a lifeline.
