As I sit down to reflect on my journey, I am filled with a sense of empowerment and liberation. The decision to undergo permanent sterilization, to have my tubes tied, was not one that I took lightly. It was a deeply personal choice, rooted in my desire for autonomy over my own body and my reproductive future.
For years (since childhood), I have known it was right for my life, but often societal expectations made me question that. Society often paints motherhood as the ultimate fulfillment for women, and the pressure to conform to this expectation can be overwhelming. But for me, motherhood was never a goal I felt compelled to pursue. The idea of pregnancy truly makes me uncomfortable in regards to my own body and I love the career and life I have built. I knew deep within myself that I did not want to have children, and I have felt a sense of peace and clarity with this step.
However, even as I embraced my decision, I encountered resistance from others who questioned my choice. I was met with judgment, disbelief, and even criticism. Some questioned whether I would regret my decision later in life, while others tried to convince me that I would change my mind.
I am so incredibly thankful for my mom and my doctor, who both provided a source of strength and encouragement. They reminded me that my worth as a woman was not tied to my ability or desire to bear children, and they celebrated my decision to take control of my reproductive future.
And so, we scheduled it. We needed to schedule a diagnostic laparoscopy and it made sense to simply do it all at the same time as the same ports were required.
After thorough discussions and evaluations, I underwent the tubal ligation. The experience itself was relatively straightforward, but the emotional journey leading up to it had it’s moments. Moments knowing I knew it was right for me, but still processing the permanence.
The day was simple. We went to the hospital, within a few hours I was in anesthesia and shortly waking up with the procedure completed.
A matter of hours have provided me with an incredible sense of freedom. I no longer have to worry about unwanted pregnancies or being forced into something that I know is not meant for my life. I am able to fully embrace my life and pursue my goals without the fear of unexpected parenthood looming over me.
I cannot speak on the healing process for this procedure solely, as I underwent other surgical procedures at the same time. The first week I was in quite a bit of pain, but manageable enough to survive on Motrin 800s. Most women I talked to prior to having the surgery said their healing was 3-5 days. Mine was longer, but again, other procedures were done and have required healing.
Choosing permanent sterilization was not a decision I made lightly, but it was the right decision for me. It was a decision rooted in self-awareness, autonomy, and empowerment. And while society may still struggle to understand and accept it, I am proud to have taken control of my reproductive future on my own terms.
To anyone out there who may be considering permanent sterilization, I urge you to trust yourself and your instincts. Your body belongs to you, and you alone have the right to make decisions about it. Surround yourself with supportive loved ones, seek out healthcare providers who respect your autonomy, and never let anyone else dictate the course of your life.

Today is a big 1,826 days (5 years) sober.
Five years feels like a lifetime ago and also like the blink of an eye. I feel like an entirely different person while still learning to love the parts of me that will always be hard to love.
Sobriety isn’t rainbows and happiness. I don’t see today as celebratory so much as a moment of deep gratitude and pride. It’s also tied to tremendous trauma and grief that made it happen. This week is the hardest one every year.
Long-term recovery teaches you something people rarely say out loud: you don’t stop being an alcoholic or addict. You become one who consciously chooses sobriety every single day instead.
And still, it is the best decision I have ever made for myself.
My life is fuller and happier than it has ever been. I’m surrounded by incredible people. I know who I am on a level I never did before, and I love the person I’ve become.
My life today would not exist without getting sober. I wouldn’t be here without Ben’s death which led to relapse and quitting, and while there is resentment in that truth, there is also gratitude that it allowed me to become the safe space I try to be for the people around me.
I’ve lived through the two hardest heartbreaks of my life in these 5 years. Ben’s death at the start and then my ex I thought I’d marry and that life. I’m still healing and miss both everyday. Grief never gets easier, but there is a beauty in being able to feel it.
A few things I’ve learned between one and five years:
• Life is still better without alcohol.
• Emotions are signals, not problems.
• Trying to prove your worth is like dumpster diving for love.
• People give you what they are, not what you deserve.
• Being alone is more peaceful than proving your worth to someone who doesn’t care.
• Sobriety doesn’t fix everything. Learning the tools to cope does.
• Asking for help is brave.
• You can’t change the past. You can only choose what you do today.
• The most compassionate thing you can do for someone is actually listen.
Ending this the same way I did four years ago:
Your journey is one day at a time.
365 days or 1,826 may feel like forever, but tomorrow is still only 24 hours away.
Take it one day.

FAQ: How do payment plans work?
I know boudoir is an investment! At the time of scheduling you will select between pay in full at the time of booking (receive a free add-on). You can also choose between a 50/50 plan, or splitting the balance into 3, 5, or 7 equal payments. With both those options your first payment is due within 48 hours of booking and your final is due 7 days prior to your session.
See how those payment amounts break down: https://arothboudoir.com/PaymentPlans

I am excited to share that my piece “Gilded,” will be part of Under the Femme Gaze: Perspectives on Body, Power, and Self-Representation this upcoming weekend on the 13th and 14th at @thevoyeurbordello in Detroit. Which is extra special because the 13th is also my five years sober and what a really fucking rad way to celebrate that.
The exhibit is comprised of femme and female-identifying artists that are examining how we see ourselves and challenging societal beauty standards, gender norms, and power structure (if you’ve shot with me, you know these are all topics we are discussing all session).
The show is being done in partnership with @hydrafund, a grass roots mutual aid fund supporting abortion access in Michigan. All donations made at the door ($5 recommended) and 50% of all sales will go directly to support their organization.

Should I add the cloud set to my options of session add-ons and quickie session options? 🫣😏
Disclaimer: if you are 100% against AI this would not be the set for you. While it is all done initially through photography and set design, Adobe generative AI features in Lightroom and Photoshop are utilized to extend the background and clouds as needed.

PSA: as I have shared, I have spent all of January and February very sick. I am still trying to catch up currently and give my body time to rest at the same time. I will be out of state the 18-24 for my best friend’s wedding and would like to be 100% caught up and have zero albums to get out at that time so when I am back in office it is just new sessions. I am closing down the remainder of my March days. If you need to get in rushed for some reason this month, you can reach out to me directly and I can see what I can do but they will not be bookable online.
I am thankful to have a full calendar, but right now your girl also needs some time to just recover and get caught up on editing after not being able to function for two months.
