When people book their first boudoir session, they usually spend a lot of time worrying about the obvious things.
What should I wear?
Should I lose weight first?
What if I’m awkward?
Will I know how to pose?
As a Michigan boudoir photographer, I’ve had these conversations hundreds of times. And while those concerns are completely normal, I’ve noticed there are a lot of things clients don’t think about until after their session is over.
Almost every week, someone tells me, “I wish I would’ve known that beforehand.”
So if you’re preparing for your first boudoir session, here are ten things nobody really tells you.
I know. Groundbreaking information.
But, most clients assume they’re the only one showing up with butterflies in their stomach. They imagine everyone else who books boudoir is confident and fearless.
That hasn’t been my experience at all.
Most people arrive feeling excited and nervous at the exact same time. The nerves don’t mean you’re making a mistake. They usually mean you’re stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying something new. That’s a pretty normal place to be.
I’m just going to say it.
A lot of boudoir poses feel weird.
You’re arching your back, pointing your toes, stretching your neck, and holding positions that don’t feel particularly natural in the moment…and make you sore the next day. A lot of your session you’ll be thinking, “There is absolutely no way this looks good.”
Then I’ll turn the camera around and show you the image.
And suddenly it all makes sense.
Boudoir is very much a trust-the-process experience.
Many first-time clients arrive convinced they need an entire suitcase full of outfits.
For starters, sessions consist of three outfits with some additional if you do add-ons.
But, some of my favorite images come from a single bodysuit, an oversized sweater, a button-down shirt, or the Just the Sheets add-on. The outfit matters far less than most people think it does.
The good news is that you don’t have to figure it all out alone. My client closet is available to every client and includes over 400 pieces ranging from XS-5XL.
A lot of people assume professional hair and makeup exists to make them look like someone else.
That’s never been the goal.
Hair and makeup are part of the experience. They give you a chance to relax, settle into the day, get to know me, and ease into being taken care of. It’s less about transformation and more about helping you feel prepared, comfortable, and confident walking into your session.
This one surprises people.
Many clients spend weeks worrying about specific body parts before their session. Their stomach. Their arms. Their thighs. Their stretch marks.
Then the session starts.
And pretty quickly, most people stop focusing on those things.
They’re concentrating on following directions while holding a pose and trying to breathe through their mouth, laughing at my terrible jokes, trying new poses, and actually enjoying themselves. The things that felt huge beforehand often become much smaller once you’re in the experience.
This might be one of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography.
People often think confidence comes first.
In reality, confidence is usually the outcome.
Most clients don’t walk into my boudoir studio in Bay City, Michigan feeling like they’ve completely figured themselves out. They show up nervous, uncertain, and sometimes questioning whether they can actually do this.
But then, they do the damn thing anyway (and spoiler alert, they survived).
People tend to imagine boudoir sessions as serious, dramatic experiences.
They’re often surprised by how much laughing happens.
We talk. We joke. We celebrate the good poses. We laugh at the awkward poses. We fix bra straps, I bitch about how hard they are to adjust. We move furniture. We create art.
It’s not nearly as intimidating as people imagine it will be, a large portion is two girls just hanging out.
Sometimes clients cry.
Sometimes they laugh.
Sometimes they stare at their images in complete silence for a few seconds because they genuinely don’t know what to say (puts me right into an internal panic attack that they hate them).
Not because they suddenly became a different person.
Because they’re seeing themselves from a perspective they rarely allow themselves to see, or haven’t ever seen.
That can be a surprisingly emotional experience.
I know that’s a strange thing for a photographer to say.
The photos are incredible, if I do say so myself. They’re artwork you’ll have for years.
But when clients tell me about their experience months later, they usually talk about something else.
They talk about how they felt.
They talk about doing something they never thought they could do.
They talk about laughing, feeling supported, and stepping outside of their comfort zone.
The photos are the product, the experience is the value.
This is probably the thing I hear most often after a session.
Not because someone suddenly became confident overnight or because their life completely changed.
But because they spent so much time worrying about whether they could do it and then realized they absolutely could.
They stopped waiting until they felt ready.
And that ended up being enough.
Your first boudoir session doesn’t require confidence, experience, or perfection.
You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to have a specific body type. You don’t need to show up feeling fearless.
You just need to be willing to trust the process.
As a Bay City boudoir photographer, I’ve photographed hundreds of women who were convinced they were too awkward, too nervous, or too inexperienced for boudoir. Every single one of them started exactly where you are now: wondering what it would be like.
The only way to find out is to step through the door.
FAQ: Can I keep my photos private?
A: Yes. Your privacy is always respected. I only share images with written permission, and you’ll choose your privacy level after your reveal.

Minimal doesn’t mean boring. It means timeless, elegant, and beautifully vulnerable. My Just the Sheets add-on uses only soft white sheets and natural body lines to tell a story that’s raw, emotional, and intimate.
Ideal for clients who want to keep it simple while still creating deeply powerful images by letting your natural energy shine without distraction. It’s subtle, sensual, and makes space for your personality to take center stage.

“I’ve had the best experiences being photographed with Arielle! She is beyond talented in all aspects; hair and makeup, her ability to give pose direction and provide comforting guidance was second to none. I have worked with Arielle twice now and both times she has been extremely professional and very knowledgeable in her trade! I can’t say enough good!”
